Urban Pest Birds - the problems caused :
Bird droppings look unsightly and can damage buildings, also they can block gutters and drains which can lead to water damage.
Birds can be a threat to human health, as a source of allergens leading to Allergic Alveolitis and Ornithosis, thus giving Pigeons the unsavory nickname of Flying Rats.
Bird droppings can be extremely slippery, leading to problems in areas where the public has access.
Bird nests can block chimneys and flues, which can lead to serious build –ups of poisonous gases. Nests can also harbor many unpleasant insects, including : Fleas, mites, bugs, ticks and lice along with houseflies and blowflies.

Many products are advertised which claim to be effective against birds. Mangan Contracts only install systems, which we know will work on a long-term basis. Which rules out many of the products on sale to the general public.
The key starting point for any bird control project is to identify accurately the bird species concerned because installing the wrong system for the wrong species may actually make the situation worse !!
The main bird pest that we have come across in Cyprus so far is the Feral Pigeon (Columba Livia) it is also the number one bird pest throughout the world, however smaller birds such as starlings etc can also cause problems.
Methods:
The most effective method for all bird species is by the use of a properly installed netting system, correctly installed it provides protection to property by presenting an impenetrable barrier, so totally excluding the birds. It is of paramount importance to first correctly identify the species concerned as to install a 50mm mesh netting system to proof against smaller birds will actually protect them from predators and make the situation worse. Again using 19mm net against Pigeons may enable them to stand on it and actually nest on it. We use netting specific to the bird species identified.
Also a properly installed color coordinated netting system is difficult to see from a distance.
Other methods include :
Point Systems (also known as bird spikes) these sound like a cruel way to deter birds as the public generally think that they spike the birds (hence the unfortunate name tag) however the reason they work is that the birds cannot close their wings when they try to land and have to go elsewhere.
Similarly bird wire and bird coils work on the same principal. Unfortunately the point systems and bird wire systems generally only work on larger bird species such as gulls and pigeons.
For most proofing work the best and most cost effective results usually come from using more than one system.
Weed Control

A weed can be described as any plant that is growing in a place that you do not want it to be.
Weeds can be unsightly and can cause damage to property by widening cracks in the structure of buildings and allowing water access and can also block gutters and drains. Also they can cause trips and slips to the general public and can lead to public liability claims against the owners of the property.
In domestic situations weeds can lead to a reduction in the value of your property by limiting the appeal of the property to potential buyers, as a property with a well kept, neat appearance will always attract more interest. We can provide selective weed control for lawns i.e. kill the weeds and leave the grass. Many people rotovate or dig up their lawn without actually needing to and if people dig up their gardens without treating the weeds first then they are actually spreading the weeds in the ground and they will have more weeds next year.
For commercial buildings such as hotels etc. we can reduce the time that the hotels grounds men spend on weed control and allow them to concentrate on something more productive such as floral displays etc.
For industrial buildings such as factories, weed control is important in ensuring that the premises are safe for their employees and that no fire risks are present by providing a fire break between the vegetation and the building, also vegetation too close to building provides habitat for vermin.
